Before you start shopping for a washer and dryer, there are several important factors you should keep in mind. This includes things like size, configuration, and wash and dry performance, amongst others. We broke down each of these factors to make the shopping process a little easier for you.

Should You Get a Front Load or Top Load Washer

When searching for new laundry, you generally have two options: front load vs top load washers. The type you choose will ultimately depend on your needs in terms of cleaning performance and laundry room configuration.

A Word About LG Top Load Washers
Top load washers are easy to load without bending down too low. They also allow you to add the last forgotten sock mid-cycle.

If you are ready to replace your old washing machine and have been uneasy about getting a front loader, you have found your match. LG top load washer models typically ace all product reviews since they overcame the age-old issue of poor fabric care associated with top load washers. The company incorporated the latest cleaning and steam technologies, usually reserved for front-load products in their top load washers.

LG makes high efficiency (HE) impeller top loaders. Which means that the washer uses drum motions to rub the clothing against each other. This is a much gentler option than using a traditional agitator. In agitator models (i.e. technology from the last century), the agitator rubs against the clothes to get them clean. This helps to loosen soiling and penetrate water and detergent into the fabrics. However, agitators are rough on clothes.

Although washers are typically more high-tech than dryers, you still have options in this area as well. When choosing a dryer, you need to know your fuel type and venting options: gas vs electric dryer and vented vs ventless.

Gas vs Electric
In order to install a gas dryer, you’ll need a gas hookup. Gas dryers utilize a fan and natural propane to heat and dry your laundry. Although these dryers are more difficult to install, they tend to dry your clothes faster. Gas dryers also have a longer lifespan than electric dryers.

LG WM1388HW

Electric dryers, on the other hand, are easy to install and only require an electrical outlet to run. However, you’ll need to determine whether you need a 110/120V or 220/240V connection. Electric dryers work by activating a fan that continuously pushes hot air into the machine. The electricity is also used to keep the clothes in motion as they dry. However, these dryers don’t typically last as long as gas dryers.

Vented vs Ventless
In order to determine whether you need a vented or ventless dryer, you need to find out whether or not you can vent outside from your laundry area. If you live in an apartment building, you’ll generally need a ventless dryer. Most (almost all) 27-inch or wider, full-sized dryers are vented, and most compact models (24-inch wide) are ventless. LG makes both vented and ventless dryers.

Size Matters

Before purchasing a washer or dryer, it’s incredibly important to measure the available space you have in the room. Based on the thousands of customers we’ve helped over the years, we simply can’t emphasize this point enough. We’ve seen so many people order washers and dryers, wait patiently for them to arrive, and find that they don’t fit in the space allotted in their laundry room.

Even though most washers are usually 27 inches wide, you’ll find that some brands add 3-4 inches for larger capacity. You should always allow for at least 6 inches of space behind the machine for connecting the water and power, and at least an inch on the side between the washer and dryer.

If you’re short on space, it might be a good idea to consider compact or stackable washers instead. Most stackable washers have a matching dryer, and these become a great solution for limited square footage. However, having your appliances side-by-side is the only option for a top-load washer and dryer.

Just like with washers, most full-sized dryers are also 27 inches wide, but larger capacities can mean that some models are 2-3 inches wider than this. However, it’s possible to find compact models that measure 24 inches or less. Measuring the height, width, and depth of the area for your dryer is critical, and you’ll also need to add on an extra inch to the side if next to a washer plus 6 inches of depth for door clearance and hookups.

The LG washer and dryer catalog covers all popular sizes – from small, apartment size laundry (24 inch width, 25 ¼ inch depth, 33 ½ inch height) to full size (up to 29 5/18 inch width, 33 ¾ inch depth, 41 ¼ inch height).

Configuration Options: Stackable vs Side by Side

When it comes to configuration, you have a few different options, including side-by-side, stacked, side-by-side on pedestals, and two stacked units side by side. However, the configuration you choose will also depend on whether you opt for top-load or front-load machines.

If you have a top-load washer and dryer, you can only use a side-by-side configuration. However, if you have a front-load washer and dryer, you can choose from a number of different configurations, including stacked, side-by-side on pedestals, and two stacked units side-by-side.

Cleaning and Drying Performance

More than any other factor, you’ll want to ensure your washer cleans well. It should offer enough cycles and options to cover all of your needs and potential cleaning situations. The same is true when you select the matching dryer.

For example, a steam feature is useful if you have allergies, as it helps to reduce allergens. Manufacturers suggest that this technology penetrates fabrics with powerful steam, eliminating dirt, odors and wrinkles with lower water consumption than conventional washers. This way, you’ll get a more effective cleaning experience, all while consuming less water.

Cleaning Performance
Overall, LG offers excellent cleaning performance thanks to their 6motion, Steam, and TurboWash Technology. Steam deeply penetrates fabrics to remove stains and prevent wrinkles. It’s also a great feature if you have allergies, as it works to to reduce certain allergy-causing particles. LG’s 6motion Technology uses six wash motions to maximize washing performance. And finally, TurboWash brings you a shorter cycle without compromised cleaning performance. These unique features help to bring you cleaner clothes with every wash.

Drying Performance
LG’s drying performance is just as impressive as its washing performance. In addition to powerful drying capabilities for standard loads, there are also unique drying cycles for specific situations. For example, with the TurboSteam feature, you can throw in your wrinkled shirt and have it looking perfect in less than ten minutes. This feature also helps to refresh fabrics and reduce wrinkles in half the time of other steam settings.

Additionally, built-in moisture sensors help to detect the laundry’s dampness and shut off the machine when clothes are dry. This way, your clothes won’t get overdried and you’ll also save energy. This is an improvement over thermostats, which tends to make the dryer run longer. The extended tumble also helps to keep your clothes wrinkle free by tumbling intermittently without heat.

Noise and Vibration

When searching for your ideal washer and dryer, you’ll want quiet models. Thanks to LG’s TrueBalance Anti-Vibration System, these washers run quietly for a non-disruptive laundry experience. This anti-vibration technology keeps your LG unit running without running your life — you can go about your day without disruptive noise or alarming vibrations. This allows you to place your washer or dryer anywhere in your home, even near frequently used living areas or bedrooms.

Additionally, top-load washers tend to be noisier than their front-load counterparts. However, this problem was solved with LG’s TrueBalance and TrueBalance Plus technologies. These features help to balance the top-load washers, reducing both vibration and noise.

Wifi Connectivity

Nowadays, most people expect their appliances to keep up with their fast-paced lives. Wireless connectivity is a huge element of that pursuit. Fortunately, LG provides plenty of connectivity options that’ll make your laundry day a more flexible, connected experience. Let’s look at some of LG’s flagship connectivity features.

NFC-Tag – What does it mean?
NFC stands for Near Field Communication and is part of the magic behind “tap-and-go” services like Apple and Android Pay. LG’s brought this NFC-Tag On technology to their appliances to help with diagnostics. To use the technology, simply download the app on a compatible smartphone and connect it directly to your machine. Then, hold the phone near the tag-on symbol to diagnose any problems. You can even check the cycle progress or add brand new wash programs this way.

SmartThinQ
LG’s Smart ThinQ app allows you to expand the limits of your laundry room and do your laundry on-the-go. The SmartThinQ technology lets you start and stop wash cycles remotely and receive helpful reminders about scheduled maintenance. This feature also diagnoses problems without ever needing to call an LG representative.

Thanks to voice-activation technology, which works with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, you can manage your laundry with simple voice commands.

Smart Diagnosis
With the addition of Smart Diagnosis, problems can be solved without having to call an LG representative. The app can record and analyze the special tones emitted by Smart Diagnosis units and instantly provide the troubleshooting steps you need.

Energy and Water Efficiency

At a minimum, your washer should meet all Energy Star Requirements determined by the US government. LG washers are rated as one of the top performers in Energy Star listings and are guaranteed to save you money on utility costs. You’ll also consume less water thanks to the integrated steam technology in LG washers.
